October 9th, 2001
Sand beneath my toes,
Breeze in my hair,
Salt on my lips,
I stumble.
Far from childhood excitement,
I drown watching the waves.
Daddy's looking haggard,
His face fallen far,
His guitar in the corner,
Dusty and out of tune.
We clumsily hide our watering eyes,
Brokenness in straight backs
And raised chins.
Triangles with two sides
Are, after all, just joined lines.
The ivory box is opened.
Already the ashes are drifting away.
All that she was in soft soot.
And I'm left wondering
In innocence and foggy youth.
