Just think of the pizza party on the line. One person from your class has to answer 2 x 2 for the win in front of the school but then they go silent and don't say anything. Why? Nowadays kids are participating less and less the younger they are. But what can help stop this? Kids should be encouraged more to participate as in the later run in many companies such as engineering everyone has to build their part but if you don't participate it will be tough to get stuff done. When kids get into college, they will most likely get bad grades as “discussions are a big deal in college and are a grade in class' ' quoted by sophomore in college, Rajvee Patel. Since college requires participation, kids will need to be taught how to participate. Therefore, there are several strategies teachers can use to increase participation.

The initial question investigated was what grade participates the most, but changed  to how can teachers help students increase participation. The initial hypothesis was that the 6th graders will participate less because they are new to the school and the 8th graders will participate more as they are comfortable in the school. When walking around the school, many kids in classes that had lectures and were asked questions seemed not to participate as much. Adding, when going to class B27 many students were working in groups focusing on their work while the teacher was walking around helping kids. This also, made me think that kids like to participate more when in groups compared to being lectured and asked questions. In addition, I also walked into class A09 which was split into groups and out of the 16 kids 15 of them were participating. This also shows that kids participate better in groups compared to lectures. But there are many outer ways teachers can help increase participation.

Transition sentence needed first… How can teachers increase participation in kids' lives? (interview)I interviewed a teacher Mrs. Carter teaches at Brooklawn Middle School. For example, in her interview she told me that all kids have different ways of participating as some kids like groups and some like a class discussion. In addition, teachers pay attention to kids during the start of the year and try to find out what works by using different ways of discussions. From an article,  (“Norrel-Aitch) it stated that “Participation can be increased in many ways by teachers using different ways of participation”. This proves that kids all might just now like the way of participation that is being used in the classroom. According to an article from Hey Teach (“How”)  a survey was recorded with 500 middle schoolers and found out why kids don't participate in large discussions(Hey Teach). This shows us kids are scared of being wrong in big discousins and don't want to embarrass themselves.

In conclusion, teachers can increase participation in several ways. This issue is important in schools because participation is used later on in life. For example, participation is used in many construction jobs and in engineering jobs as that is needed to keep a job, because it will make you seem sloppy. This will also show how less kids participate in some ways compared to others. Therefore in order to increase participation teachers should try to find the best way to help kids participate.
