"Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood."

Summary:

Angela Cuyler has never considered herself to be a criminal, but she is prepared to lie, steal, and whatever else is necessary to keep her family alive as they are forced to live through Auschwitz, the most famous of Nazi death camps. Recording her experiences on a small notepad, she watches the world as she knows it shatter around her. As the bombs fall and the smell of death fills her lungs, she dares to defy this horrible regime and, more importantly, to continue to live day after day.
