Today, I got a haircut. My hair is naturally straight, black and was quite long. I haven’t cut it for the past three years since I wanted to wait until I could cut off ten inches for Locks of Love. However, my mother got very tired of it and decided to cut it today, almost as a spontaneous decision. My hair had many split ends and the hair was dead and unhealthy towards the bottom, so the stylist cut it five inches.

In terms of looks, that may not seem as much, but to me it is. I live with my hair 24/7, so cutting even an inch makes me look and feel really different.

I feel that getting a haircut is an analogy in itself. Getting a haircut made me revaluate my life, changed my appearance, and made me explore my passion: writing. Everyone needs to find their own “haircut”, something that they haven’t experienced in years, and something that causes them to think about their lives, and to unveil a new passion, or follow an existing one.

The haircut really lifted weight off of my shoulders, and I am happier and lighter now. I’ve definitely been spending more time examining myself and peering into the mirror to see if there is anything beyond the two dimensional girl I see before me. A third dimension, perhaps?

People need to find their “something” that causes them to truly enjoy themselves and spend their free time pursuing that “something”. I have been exploring new hairstyles, colors, and accessories.

This could be getting a new job, creating a blog, buying a house, etc. This was quite exaggerated and dramatic, almost sarcastic, but there really is something in my life that is making me change for the better. It is just easier to say that it was the haircut. And I am really not that narcissistic to spend hours looking at myself in the mirror, but getting haircut definitely encouraged me to write this post.

People really do need to explore their passions and use their free time in that, and not surfing the web. Though, if that is your passion, then go right ahead. Haircuts really do have an underlying beauty. Find something that lifts weight off of your shoulders (not only in the literal sense) and makes you happy.
