Lunch for Mildred
I learned that treating your body nicely can result in a world of fun and also a very long life.
I learned this over this past summer by going on a mission trip with me best friend Nathan, were we working we were delivering meals to elderly who couldn't get to the store to buy their own food. The group I was in would deliver the meals and check on the elderly, some people in my group were funny… for about 5 minutes, They just keep saying the same joke over and over I can’t take this. I thought to myself. On the second to last day we were helping we went to an old lady who lived on a long winding road the adult who was with us said “Here's a good thing to remember when working with the elderly: be nice and sweet when you're around them and they will treat you like your their kid”. I walked up to the beautiful white house full of windows and had a red door, when I got up there I knocked on the door but no one answered at first then through the window I saw someone move so I shouted “Meals on wheels” and that's when she opened the door and I could finally see her wrinkled face, she was wearing pink fuzzy pajamas with little frogs on them and a black and brown cat on her shoulder. She was very nice, patient, and sweet.
Once Mildred let us into her lovely home I got to see Mildred's cats, she took the food from me and put it on the table next to her. When she was done with that we started to helper her get back to her chair. Once we got her to her chair we started to chat with and the adult with us said “you know-she doesn't normally get up and answer the door her daughter usually is the one to gets the door and she is 98.” she said. we also talked about how our day were going and what we had done and if she needed any help with anything like getting her a drink. When were talking to MIldred she told us what she would to when she was little. Then she started to talk about what she does now and how she would live life to the fullest and never give up on things in life if they were challenging. The lady also told me if anything is to hard: never give up on it and amazing things will happen.
Once we finished talking to her we said goodbye and the lady got up and hugged me; you would have thought I was her only child because she got up so quick to hug me before we left her home. After she hugged me I said thank you for your life lessons . Before we made it out the first door she said she hoped we would come back to New York on another mission trip and come see her again because she loved the company and telling us all of her stories. I told her that it was a lot of fun helping her and that I’d love to come back.
In conclusion what I learned that summer has changed the way I live. It’s changed the way I live because now when I do things I think of what could happen if something goes wrong like when I made a zipline out of rope and the first time I went on it the rope came undone but now I make sure everything I do I’ve thought what the worst case scenario is. Meeting that lady has keep me out of the hospital because some of the things I do could have almost put me in the hospital.
