The Vertical Appearance
What was I thinking? I hope this doesn’t go as bad as I’m imagining it will. Oh my gosh, Samantha, chill out this isn’t such a big deal.
My feet are 30 pound weights dragging across the floor as I approach the door to go outside onto the roof. As I’m about to open the door I am hit with an amazing view of Las Vegas’ luminous buildings, I see everything from the M&M store on the strip to the desert out in the distance.
“Uncle Dave, you should take a picture of this,” I say but he’s already snapping away with his high end camera.
“These are great pictures, ” My uncle is a professional photographer and uses every chance he can get to take photos. He will do weddings often and posts the pictures he takes on his free time on social media.
As I walk outside a blast of 103 degree air hits me. I have been inside the cool, air-conditioned hotel, Rio de Janeiro, for so long that it is completely unexpected. I am so caught up in how sweltering hot it is that I overlooked how high up this zipline actually is. When I asked how high up it is they told me it was over 490 feet up.
My uncle and I came to the zipline alone while the rest of the family is at Circus Circus for the second time. The plan was that my uncle would do the zipline with me, but he chickened out so I’m doing it alone. I take a glance at what I’m actually doing and come to find out it’s a chair and I will be sitting in it alone with one strap around my waist.
“Go ahead and take a seat and we’ll strap you in,” said one of the very good looking workers. We already had paid inside the hotel so I was all set to begin.
I got strapped in and I suddenly can no longer feel my feet touching anything, they are just dangling. I look down and they have lowered the platform, I am about to take off. I then begin feeling the chair give a little jolt forward. I was off.
Wow! This view is fantastic!
The view didn’t help how terrified I am. Going 33 MPH, 490 feet in the air is not something I’m used to. My heart beat is going at a rapid pace. I’m holding onto the handles as if they are my prey. Looking around I can see everything. To my left is the Las Vegas strip and to my right is a man-made pond that they use to do a water show at night. As I approach the other building I think I’m getting off at I notice nobody is there.
What’s going to happen when I get to this building?
When I feel an abrupt stop and begin going backward I know what’s going on.
Oh okay, I’m just going back to the other side.
As I’m going back my adrenaline kicks in, zooming through the air is exhilarating! I am on cloud 9- a beautiful view of Vegas, gliding through the air having the time of my life when it all just stops.
“You can let go now,” says the worker. I look down and see that I still have a tight grip on the handles.
The platform is once again beneath my feet and I am able to get up and walk back onto the roof. I love ziplining!
“How was it?” My uncle pops up out of nowhere asking me.
“It was a lot of fun! You should have gone on it.”
“Would you like to buy any pictures of yourself on the ride today?” One of the employees interrupts.
We looked at the pictures and ended up getting a 5X7 of me on the zipline.
Although I was a little hesitant about doing the zipline at first I’m glad I went through with it. I may never have the chance to do it again and it was a very exciting experience.
