The Men in Masks
It was a night like any other night, and we were at my house which was located at the end of the coldasac. My brother and I were fighting over the remote, and waiting for dinner to be ready. I was nine years old at the time and was a very easily scared child. Mom always makes the best dinner that made me feel like all my worries disappeared. That night she made a chicken soup that made all the anger that I had against my brother that night melt away. My brother and I were always fighting. He would make me want to stop and scream in my pillow at the top of my lungs. Anyway, we scarfed down our delicious dinner and waited for our father to come home. My brother eventually surrendered the remote to me and we watched my favorite show at the time ICarly. “ I’m going to go take a shower. You kids be good. Okay?” Said my mom.
While I was laying on the couch watching T.V. the doobellrang. Our doobellwasn’t exactly working at the time so it made the most horrible screeching noise. My brother ran to the door thinking it was my dad. When he reached the door he suddenly screamed, “Ahhh, there is someone with a mask on outside the door”. At first I didn’t believe him because he lied all the time. I walked up to the door and when I got two feet from the door the man behind the door banged on the door with what sounded like a metal bat. I jumped and my heart dropped. I didn’t know whether to go closer to the door and see who is actually there or go call the police or get my brother and hide in a corner and wait for them to leave. I walked closer and saw through the sheer green curtains that there were three men all who had all black on and masks on and a maroon car that was smashed in on the sides and had a door missing also. As if the car wasn’t already sketchy enough, it was parked in our driveway. I looked at the tall man that was banging on our door and he turned his head and caught my eye. For a split second, I saw the coldness, and evil in his eyes and I immediately got the chills that ran down my spine.
When I registered that he saw me, I ran right at my brother, who was shedding tears at this point and pulled him to come in the closet with me. While we sat in the closet I could see my heart beating through my shirt. I had never felt that scarred in my life. I could hear the man yelling “ OPEN THE DOOR,” his voice was as cold as his eyes. All the “what if’s” were running through my head at that moment. I was thinking things like “what if he breaks through the door,” “what if he has a gun.” then there was a silence. The silence felt like forever and for a second this all seemed like a dream that I had dreamed a long time ago. Just when I was actually starting to believe this wasn't real I heard a gunshot. I couldn’t help myself when I screamed. I was breathing so hard that it seemed like I just ran a mile.
During all of this my mom was taking a shower. When she had heard the gunshot. She immediately got out of the shower and started to shout our names. I could hear the panic in her voice. I could picture the horror on her face and how she would react if she didn't hear our voices. Even though my stomach was in my throat I managed to shout a “mom.” after the gunshot I didn't hear anything else, which made me more nervous because the last silence ended with a hole in the door and now I was expecting the worst. I held my brother close to me, who was shaking uncontrollably. I made a “shushing” sound to calm him down when really I was the one who needed calming down. I could hear my mothers footsteps on the stairs. I hesitated to open the door because I wasn’t sure if the strangers were gone. When I finally gathered enough strength to open the door my mom saw us and came running to us. While I embraced my mom with a hug I looked over to the window by the door and saw that there was no-one there. I felt safe in my moms arms, and I was glad that it all seemed to be over. I was thinking of how this could have ended with all of us dead, but we weren't so I had to stop thinking of what could have happened and the fact that we were all safe and unharmed. Right after we were done hugging each other my mom called the police and the police came to our house.
I heard the siren of the police cars getting closer and closer. They arrived and started to ask us many questions about the appearance of the men and their vehicle and the sound of their voice. The only thing I could think at the moment were the eyes of the man. When he looked me in the eye it were as if I could read what he was thinking. I could feel death in his eyes and regret and also I could feel how hysterical this man was and all by a glance at his eyes.
My father quickly arrived when he heard about it, but when he arrived the police men and cars were already gone searching for the criminals. When he got comfortable in the house we all turned on the T.V. and watched the news. We watched all the regular things like politics, weather, sports but when it came to criminal news something caught all of our attention. The news woman exclaimed, “ Today three men, who remain anonymous by the police were found a mile away from the home that they broke into. The three men who were all wearing masks and driving a maroon car went inside the Young’s family house after the boy opened it and shot the mother of three kids and killed her. They also managed to shoot the youngest child, Peter, in the back. Peter is now at the childrens hospital in recovery and will be there for a few days but will be fine, according to the doctors. The police also mentioned that they tried to break into another house and did not succeed and that the family who was living in that house is very lucky.”
