Family Counts
Mom, Dad, Sawyer, Nolan, grandpa, grandma and I all are in the midst of driving to Disney world, a surprise vacation that my mom and dad surprised us with. We had to go on a treasure hunt around the house to find out where we were going! My mom, dad, Sawyer, Nolan and I all are in the truck smushed into the back seat, bickering over whose side of the seat is who’s. My parents looked at each other knowing that it's going to be a LONG ride.
My grandma and grandpa got their own RV to drive with us down to Florida. Nolan, Sawyer and I were all pleading my mom and dad to pick one of us to ride in the fancy camper on the couch so we could have our own space! We drove for hours each day and for the night parked our travel trailer that we were pulling and my grandma and grandpa's RV in a campground for the night.
I would always sit on the crammed bench seat of the picnic table and eat our dinner every night with each other. Once we got to Florida it was such a relief to be able to park our camper for the next 2 weeks in the Disney World Campground. As soon as we got in to the campground after feeling like we waited the whole day to get in, we immediately went to the pool to cool off and relax from that long car ride. My grandma stayed out of the pool with my grandpa in the shade because of his multiple myeloma and other cancer diagnosis that he has been battling for years.
At the time I didn't realize since I was younger that we mainly went on that trip to have fun for the last time with him before he passed away. We loved the experience of going to the rainforest café in our fancy clothes and being able to have dinner with the family.
Even though I know there was something wrong when my grandpa was not able to eat with us. We then went back and got on the boat to drive back to our campground area and went to the pool to cool off. It was so peaceful at night time.
My grandpa was able to get in the pool to know that the sun had gone down! I can still remember and play back that night swimming and having no care in the world at that moment, talking and making jokes with my family to diving for the pool rings on the bottom of the pool. Always when we were walking back to our trailers we would see who could spot any lizards and show them to my grandma knowing she hated them! Having quality family time is so important to me because you're able to have those connections and memories when we grow old.

I wrote this piece in my creative righting class at Arrowhead High school because I wanted to capture a moment in life that I will never forget with my family and how much it meant to me.
