The Dress
The Dress
“Are you saying yes to the dress?” the boutique worker says. My mom is crying. We are all so excited for her. Then we heard my sister answer.
In the car on the way to Rebecca’s Wedding Boutique, I felt so much joy for my sister, Serena. I could not believe that she will be getting married and moving out in a year. I think about how the house will feel so empty with my other sisters in college and her living in a different house. All my life she has been there, always either reading a book on the couch or asking me if I want to go to Target with her. I am thinking about her not being there every day, how I will be the only one left at home.
Finally, we are here. As soon as we walked in, I could see my sister’s face light up like the sun. We see all the black, gold, and white decorations spread through the store, all the beautiful wedding dresses, each one different from each other. We see all the other families together, watching their loved ones find the wedding dress of their dreams. As my other sister, Bella, and I are looking at the rest of the boutique, my mom and Serena look at wedding dresses for her to try on.
I hear Serena saying, “Oh I really like this one,” and “No I don’t like that one as much.” My mom gives her endless options, trying to help her narrow it down. As she tries on the dresses, my mom, my sisters, and I talk about details for the wedding like colors, flowers, and food.
I hear Serena and the boutique worker talking as she gets changed. “We met at Goodwill, where I work. He works at the bank across the street so one of our friends set us up.”
“Oh, that is so amazing. Where did he propose?” the boutique worker asked.
Serena replied, “He proposed at Brown Park.”
“I bet it was beautiful.”
“It really was.”
When she walks out in her first dress, my mom starts to cry; it is finally starting to hit her. Serena is really getting married. All the dresses she tries on are beautiful, but none of them were the dress. She still has one more to try on.
Serena walks out in her last dress. Her face is telling us all we need to know. It is the dress. She is smiling bigger than I have ever seen her. The dress is beautiful. It is a long, flowy, ivory dress with lace flower details and sparkles spread throughout. The dress complements her so much. It makes her brown eyes and hair stand out against its white fabric. It causes her eyes to sparkle like moonlight against water.
I get lost in the beauty of the flowy layers of the dress, the sparkles shining with the light, and lacy details all over the ivory dress. The dress feels like silk with thin layers of delicate tulle and lace on top. I hear my mom start to cry again as Bella calls my sister, Grace, who could not be there. Serena is so beautiful, so happy, so excited. This is the dress.
We all stop to hear Serena say, “I am saying yes to the dress!”
