“Succulents are always thought to be the easiest plant to keep alive, in reality, they are not,” says Olivia Green, a three-year succulent lover, with over 30 succulents. Green started learning about succulents years ago, learning through online articles, videos, and people she knew. Green has gone through lots of trials with succulents before being able to keep them alive. But not to worry, there are ways to ensure your succulents can stay alive for years.

The number one, most important thing everyone must know if you own a succulent is to not overwater it. Because succulents have such thick leaves they are able to hold and sustain the water they are given for prolonged periods of time. Succulents are like a sponge, able to soak up a multitude of water. Unlike other plants which have much thinner leaves, not being able to keep as much water. In order to keep your succulent healthy you need to water the succulent every two to three weeks, giving it enough water to soak the soil. Don’t beguile yourself into thinking that you need to water your plant more. If you ever notice that your succulent’s leaves are turning clear, or translucent, this is a key sign that the succulent is being over-watered. If this happens, ensure the soil is completely dry before watering it again.

Olivia also states: “A pot with good drainage is very important to the health of your succulents.” Putting a succulent in a pot without draining causes the water to sit in/or on top of the soil. This could make you think that you are overwatering the plant, when really it just needs to pass through the pot. So, it is important you find a pot that allows the water to drain out.

Succulents are an amazing way to decorate a room and add a little life somewhere. Using these tips, you will be able to easily take care of your succulents. It will also ensure that you can grow and keep your succulents alive.

This is a piece written from an interview I had. This interview was from an expert at keeping succulents alive. I hope that others will be able to relate to the struggle of keeping plants alive, and hopefully learn from the piece and be able to keep them alive.
