Often it's the deepest pain,
that causes us to grow into
your highest self.

Wendy Darling pulled the covers up to her chin. The wind was especially cold tonight. She had left the window open for Peter Pan, a boy who lived in Neverland, and every night took her and her brothers to his home. But on this night she was thinking, thinking about how every night she would fly to Neverland, but when she came only a little time had passed, or none at all.

She was still trying to figure it out when a dirty-blonde haired boy, dressed in trousers and leaves sat on her bed. "Wendy?" he asked, "Are you awake?"

"Yes, Peter," Wendy answered then jumped out of bed, instantly regretting it. Her deep, sea blue, nightgown didn't seem to keep the arctic-like blast from giving her goosebumps from head to toe. She went and got a cardigan and put it over her head. She wondered if she should put some socks on her bare feet, but they would most likely get ruined in Neverland.

She looked at Peter, "how can you stand this weather? It is so cold."

Peter smiled, "I don't know it just doesn't bother me."

He flew over to where Wendy was waking John and Michael. John rubbed his eyes and yawned, he put on his glasses and jumped up, got his umbrella, and started tapping Michael to wake him up.

Wendy stood back and watched as Michael threw a pillow at John and Peter, who had now gotten bored and wanted to fly to Neverland as quickly as he could. She clapped her hands together, "now boys, would you please be nice. It is not very gentleman-like to attack a boy while he is in bed."

John and Peter looked down, acting as though they were sorry, but Wendy could see a smile crossing over their faces. She picked up Michael and went to the window ledge. Tinker Bell fluttered about right outside the window. Tink had refused to come into the Darling's window, for Nana, the nanny, who was also a dog, had tried to bite her, thinking she had come to harm Michael, John, and Wendy. Thankfully she had not been hurt, but she was ignoring the little Darlings and would argue with Peter more than she already did.

Wendy didn't need Tink to give her any more pixie dust, for she could fly without it now. Wendy thought of all the good times she and Peter and the boys had had while in Neverland. And almost immediately she felt a tingle in her toes that spread throughout her body. She felt weightless, she turned to look at her side, Peter was there, grinning, almost as if he knew what she was thinking. Wendy jumped out of the window, but didn't fly, the ground came closer and closer to her and the snoring Michael she was holding in her arms. She suddenly started to fly and spun in the air.

Peter clapped and cheered, causing a few lights to turn on in the surrounding houses, but luckily no one came out. Michael woke up and got out of Wendy's arms. And started to fly around. Wendy shook her head then flew to Peter. "Peter, can I ask you something?"

"Sure Wendy." His eyes blinked like the stars, making Wendy blush and look away.

"How come time is different on Neverland and London?"

"Time is a strange thing Wendy, always fluttering and floating about. It doesn't listen to anything, it will stop and go if it pleases, and never wait a moment to see if you are alright."

"But that doesn't tell me how time is different."

Peter winked, then flew in a circle around Wendy. All four of the children flew into the sky, the second star to the right, and blinked into Neverland.

The Lost Boys greeted Wendy and the boys as they touched down. Cubby came up to them and grinned. "Ready for some fun?"

Wendy fell asleep almost immediately when she came back home. To London, it had missed the three little Darlings for only a minute or two. But in Neverland the Darlings had stayed for three weeks.

The day was not exciting, for Wendy was not the best at making friends, and her joy for the night when she could fly far away was numerous.

The day passed quickly, and after Mr. and Mrs. Darling had tucked the children in bed John sat up in bed. "Wendy, how long will we stay in Neverland tonight?"

"I don't know, till we want to go home I suppose," Wendy asked while braiding her hair. Not moments after that Peter burst through the window and landed with a plunk on the floor. "Wendy! Boys! You will never believe it! Capt. Hook and his crew are back in Neverland!" Peter flew to the sealing and started to pace it. "This means even more fun! We can go attack them, and steal from them and..."

Peter stopped when he saw Wendy's face. Wendy got a satchel and started to pack medical supplies. "Oh come on Wendy, let's not play doctor again."

"It's not a game, Peter," Wendy said then jumped trying to grab the bag from Peter's hand.

John stood up, "Peter, let Wendy be. For the sooner she packs the sooner we will travel to fight the pirates."

Suddenly the door to the nursery burst open and Mr. and Mrs. Darling came in. Mr. Darling glared at Peter, who had taken Wendy's hand and was glaring right back at him. "You are not going anywhere."

"Father, I can explain!" Wendy yelled.

"Oh I know who he is, I know where you are going! It will lead you down a path that is stupid and childish!" Mr. Darling yelled at Peter.

"Well, I'm going!" Micheal said, then ran to the window, and jumped off of it.

Mrs. Darling screamed and ran to the window just in time for Micheal to swoop upwards laughing as he made his way to the roof.

"Sorry Mother, sorry father, we'll be back soon!" John then ran past Mrs. Darling who tried in vain to stop the boy from leaping out the window but failed as John followed in his brother's path.

"ARGGGGGG!" Mr. Darling yelled and ran at Peter who simply flew around him, Mr. Darling's momentum caused him to crash into the wall leaving a dent in the lavender wallpaper.

Peter, too, flew out the window, and now it was just Wendy facing her parents.

"Wendy, this is absolute poppycock! You will not fly after the boys you will stay here!" Mr. Darling yelled.

"But father!" Wendy protested, "we will be back soon, please let us go!"

"No!" Mr. Darling yelled.

"Wendy," Peter said from outside the window, "come with me, please." Though Wendy knew Peter was a boy no older than 15, she saw the scared little boy he was when she wasn't with him. Besides, John and Micheal were already outside waiting to go, and they wouldn't stop, what if Wendy wasn't there to protect them? No, she had to go no matter what so she dashed to the window, brought to her memory the good times with Peter so her happy thoughts would keep her afloat, and jumped.

She flew up to Peter, who was a few feet away from the window, who offered Wendy his hand. Wendy took it, trying to ignore the shouts from her father as they flew higher and higher until they were touching a star. They pushed through its silky surface and were in a place with water and a little island right in the middle. Neverland.

They flew through the clouds away from where Captain Hook and his crew could see them, then landed at the lost boy's new hideout, high up it the dense trees. "Darlings are back!" Shouted the lost boys and gathered around Wendy, John, Micheal, and Peter.

"Tell us a story, Wendy!" Nibs, dressed as a rabbit begged.

"Now is not a good time boy..." Wendy started.

"Nonsense now is a great time," Peter said, never having a real family of his understanding what had just happened between Mr. and Mrs. Darling and Wendy.

"Peter..." Wendy protested but was hushed.

"No, we want to go fight the pirates!" Micheal exclaimed.

"Peter, I- I need to go home, this was a mistake," I told Peter and the boys gasped.

"Wendy!" John exclaimed.

"We have to go back to our family, our real family!" I regretted the words as soon as I said them for a look of hurt came over Peter's face. "Peter..." I said gently. "You have to understand..."

"Understand what exactly Wendy? That you don't love Neverland anymore, that you don't love-" Peter stopped, but I knew what he was going to say. That you don't love me anymore.

"uh oh, mother and father are fighting." Cubby said unhelpfully. And all the lost boys stepped back from us.

"Peter, please I didn't mean that, but I have to go home!" I exclaimed.

"Fine go home! But you don't have a home to go to anymore!" Peter yelled at me, the first time I had seen him cry.

"What do you mean?" I asked alarmed.

"Time moves differently Wendy, at least on Neverland," Peter said sitting down on a large rock.

"What do you know that I don't?"

"Wendy..." Peter looked pained.

"What do you know that I don't!" I repeated angrily.

"It's been 117 years," Peter admitted. "Everyone- everyone is gone."

I love this fiction. I have always loved Neverland and I thought that was such a great plot twist.
