  1. Bend and Break by Keane

Although this band has been called a sad attempt at cold play and too emotional, this song just strikes a cord with me. It’s a battle with someone’s inner self and their point of breaking. If you have ever had some form of a breakdown you probably know where I’m coming from. With lines like “if only I don’t bend and break, ill meet you on the other side, ill meet you in the light” how can you not emotionally feel the pain gushing out of those words? That point where you just don’t know what to do next and how long your sanity will hold out. It’s a song about not being able to express how your feeling and not knowing what will happen tomorrow since you are on the brink of self-destruction. Is it a sad song? Yes, but it has amazing piano and vocals but the lyrics are what makes it, personally, the best sad song if your lost or just freaking out in any way. The struggles that go on inside are rarely talked about and if you need somewhere to turn, this song will always be there for you reminding you its ok to feel lost and trapped. Knowing that other people have escaped that mindset will only make you stronger and that’s what this song has done for me.

  1. How to Save a Life by The Fray

This song starts out as just a normal conversation between two people, but if you really listen it’s a tortured story of regret and remorse. It’s the tale of someone who has lost his or her friend or family member to suicide. It’s a topic that is not very easily discussed but if you have ever lost someone in that gut wrenching way this will hit you like a ton of bricks. It’s a song about someone feeling completely powerless when someone close to them loses their life. With lines like “ where did I go wrong I lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness and I would’ve stayed up with you all night if id know how to save a life” Its someone reliving the moment they found out over and over again, going over in their head how they could’ve stopped it. When something happens, your left feeling useless and pathetic you often go over how you could’ve fixed it. This song describes that muddle of emotions to a tee. This soulful track about someone overcome with loss will get you appreciating your life and opening your eyes.

  1. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

This is just an all around done with the world song. This song covers not knowing how to express yourself, not wanting anyone around, feeling like theres only one person to cure your sadness and most of all feeling alone. Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, lost, confused, heart broken, or if your just feeling utterly and completely sad then this song can be your tissues. The want to escape from your reality is a theme in this song. When you feel trapped in a no win situation, you just want to forget. With lines like “ If I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world, forget what were told before we get too old” how can you not feel something. In the end of the song it even talks about finding yourself. So if you need some soft rock reflection time to just think and be alone this song is perfect. This slow song about life evaluation will make you feel. It might just be me but this song never gets old and never loses its touch.

  1. With or Without You by U2

I’ve recently been through a heartbreak so I can first hand tell you this song helps, maybe not in the obvious way because it mostly made me cry and cry and then cry some more. It helped in the way of letting me feel and helping me figure out exactly what I was feeling. Most relationships if you cared for them will probably end like this. This song is all about how things slowly fall apart. Have you ever been hurting while being in a relationship, but it hurt just as much to not be in the relationship? Well that is the essence of this song. There’s people who you just can’t live with or without and this classic says exactly what’s on your mind thinking about the one that got away. Being miserable alone and being miserable with your special person is a common feeling this song explains perfectly. With lines like “ I can live with or without you” how can you not play it a thousand times after your break up? This U2 hit will become a breakup favourite.

  1. I’m Not Ok by My Chemical Romance

Have you ever had a problem that seemed unsolvable? School problems, love problems, or even problems at home, we all have issues. This song is someone who is crying for help in the only way they can. It’s as if they have been ignored by society and people around them and there’s no going back, when all they want is someone to ask if they need some help. Hiding your problems is one of the most common ways of dealing with your problems. This song is about someone who claims to be ok and is trying to convince themselves that they feel just fine. When you feel like this sometimes all you want to do is scream for help, but its like your in a crowded room screaming at the top of your lungs but no one will look up. With lines like “ I’m okay I mean it I’m okay! I’m not okay! I’m not okay!” you cant help but feel the confliction seeping out of those cold words. So if your hiding a deep dark secret and want comfort or you just want the strength to scream, I give you your release.

Now these are just some of my favourite songs for when I cant cope with a situation or just everyday life is getting to me. I hope they help you, adn in the comments add your personal sad song. Thanks for reading:)
