The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
The realistic fictional novel-in-verse story of Josh, JB,Chuck “Da Man” Bell is an inspiring story of brotherhood and family that most young adults can relate to. The Crossover has won the John Newberry Award and the Coretta Scott King Award for outstanding children’s literature. In this unique and inspirational novel, the author shows how family stick together to overcome many different obstacles.
Alexander’s style of rhythm and flow was exciting to read as he took the reader on a journey through the lives of Josh, JB, and Chuck Bell who shared a great love of basketball. With such the love of basketball what could possibly tear them apart?
This book shows emotional and creative images that take the reader on a journey from Chuck being very sick to the breakdown of Josh and JB’s relationship, all while still trying to win a championship game. The author’s creative style of writing makes this book a page turner.
I would recommend this book because it is inspiring to young adults and promotes the love of family and encourages them to stick together. In spite of all challenges that Josh faced he continued to chase his dreams. This makes me want to pursue my own dreams no matter what obstacles.
