Breaking Night by Liz Murray
Breaking Night has changed something inside of me. It is a true story, and it is very inspirational. Liz Murray made it out of a broken, drug addicted family in the Bronx of New York. It was painful to read at times but it was because I could feel a connection. Most her life she refused to go to school, stole food to survive, lied, and watched both her mom and dad shoot up every night. By the age of 13, she was out on the streets waiting to have a stable place to stay. She was left to figure out life all on her own. Both of her parents died from AIDS but no matter what Liz always loved her parents and her sister. Liz went on to finish school and even ended up in Harvard. Her words spoke to me at a desperate time. “In the years ahead of me, I learned that the world is actually filled with people ready to tell you how likely something is, and what it means to be realistic. But what I have also learned is that no one, no one truly knows what is possible until they go and do it.” I love this quote because I can feel exactly what she means. I would definitely recommend this book to any teenager or older.
