if a soul could soar | Teen Ink

if a soul could soar

tired old cars traverse the roads they’ve worn down,

cheeks lift briefly to life-long friends.

flying fossils flit over this old town,

ever-present water flows through stagnant river bends.

i would drive away.

away, away, to anywhere. or fly

to ranges of mountains or roaring seas,

to cities of anger or enveloping peace.

i would drive to coastal sunrise laps

and bridges of which i’ve dreamed,

fly to places hidden from all the maps

where rays of sun have beamed.

but i drive through suburbia,

and fly inside instead.
