Where I'm From

October 3, 2013

I am from “Hell”,
the house nobody could stand.
I am from “Her”,
the woman with the strong hand.
I am from the place,
where I did not want to be.
I am from the shadows,
where my face could not be seen.

I’m from a church,
a savior, and a book.
I’m from a courtroom,
with really funny looks.
I’m from a room,
that has red walls.
I’m from the kingdom,
that never falls.

I am from the outside,
looking in.
I am from a world,
of endless sin.
I am from a family,
where I do not belong.
I am from the radio,
where my heart can sing it’s song.

I’m from cussing, screaming,
and running away.
I’m from the past,
that comes back everyday.
I’m from a life of hatred,
and a loveless home.
I‘m from a place,
I don’t want to go.

I am from another world,
another life.
I am from a secret place,
where there’s no light.
I am from a,
black and white movie.
I am from the dreams,
inside of me.

I’m from someone,
who actually cares if I live or die.
I’m from somebody,
who lets me cry.
I’m from a maker,
that lives up high.
I’m from him,
whom I’ll see when I die.

I am from a life that means nothing,
An empty heart that longs to be filled
I am from the house at the end of the dead end road
Where the blood of my father was spilled
I am from a closet filled with clothes
A place that I was in for far too long
I am from coming out and walking tall
And standing so strong

I’m from that woman that I can’t stand to be near
The lady that claims that she loves me
I’m from the only real identity that I can ever have
And no longer having to live my life in fear
I’m from a school where I was a victim
But nobody ever seemed to notice
I’m from a place where I couldn’t hit them
But they made me a disgrace

I am from an empty box in the toy store
Where somebody has stolen a toy
I am from why nobody noticed
when the thief ran out the door
I am from a gift bag
For your momma’s birthday
I am from a decade
That makes being gay, okay

I’m from wearing a tux
Instead of a dress
I’m from being who I am
And not what they expect
I’m from a relationship
Where I gave my all
I’m from the reality
Where she broke my heart

I am from the edge
of a broken piece of glass
I am from falling
And nearly busting my a**
I am from a ride on the bus
In a noisy crowded seat
I am from the house with no air
And I can’t stand the heat

I’m from the end of a graphic novel
Where the main character survives
I’m from a crazy fairytale
Where my super power is telling lies
I’m from a ripped page
And a torn up script
I’m from a crazy downward spiral
Like Alice when she tripped

I am from my life
And my own journey
I am from an ending
That is really a new beginning
I am from a happy day
Where I ask a girl out and what does she say?
YES!

That’s where I am from

The author's comments:
This poem is about growing uop with my Mother... Life was rough and getting out of that abusive household wasn't much easier... Then just when I thought that I was free of harm, and away from the hurt, coming out was worse.. I was ridiculed and rejected. It took me a while to get to a place where I was comfortable in my own skin and even longer to get to a place where I did not care what other people thought.. And this poem is about my journey there.

May these raw bleeding verses purge your pain, and lead you into that valley where the sunshine touches your face. Stand tall, steel your spine, and walk with all the faith of the mustard seed! Sat nam...
