you were born an original, don't die a copy

It was a windy autumn day when I first thought of you
The classroom became our confessional
Our court, with a mock judge and hung jury
It was you on trial, but I sentenced myself instead
It could have been better,
It could have been worse.
I thought of what should have been
and I saw myself with golden wings

[chorus]
Why do I feel so broken?
Why do I feel so alone?
I ask myself a million questions
The dreaded answers run through my head
You didn’t rescue me,
You left me there to drown.
I collided with the earth
And I realized,
No one falls if they can fly.

I’m not a princess with golden hair.
I never wanted a prince charming
Never asked for a knight in shining armor
Just someone who’d stop talking once to listen,
Is that really too much to ask?
You’re no savior of the broken
You let me fall right through your hands
Watching blindly through dreamless eyes
As… i… fade… (away)

[chorus]

I need wings, oh give me wings
Cause I will fall again
But the next time I won’t plummet,
I’ll soar.
