"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else."-Judy Garland

They don't know,
They can't realize,
How my laugh,
Sometimes rings hollow,
How my humor,
Is dry and bitter,
How my smile,
Is sometimes borrowed,
They don't know,
They can't realize,
How I've fallen,
How I've cried,
They don't know,
Do they realize?
How I've loved,
And prayed,
And lied.
They don't know,
They can't realize,
How my failures abound,
How my flimsy film of confidence,
Shreds when he's around,
They don't know,
They can't realize,
How I want to kick and scream,
When the luster of possibility,
Vanishes from my dreams,
They don't know,
They can't realize,
How selfish I can be,
How angry I can get,
Or how little I can see,
They don't know,
They can't realize,
That I'm stumbling just like them,
How could they?
I keep it covered,
But I'm sick of this mask,
They don't know,
They can't realize,
All the skeletons in my closet,
That I've neatly tucked away there,
To disintegrate in the quiet,
I'll act to this day,
Like they don't even exist,
But I'm getting sick and tired,
Of faking all this perfection,
So the next time you think,
I've got it all under control,
Look underneath the mask,
To the fear and failure untold.
They don't know,
They can't realize....

Hiding everything that isn't perfect about yourself behind a mask. Evading answering questions that will make you look weak or imperfect. Pretending to fit in, but aching to stand out. Sound familiar? This is what this poem is all about.
