Before I Can Write a Song
How do I convey you?
I don't know
Sometimes it's hard to rhyme my thoughts
How do I portray you?
What do I show?
These answers must be sought
Before I can write a song
Before the words and melody flow along
I need to know what I'll say
Then I'll write away
and throw myself in headlong
And as determined as I am today
it doesn't mean it won't take long
But I'll work hard to write you a song
This is a struggle
Paper vs. pen
but I know it can be fought
I'll have to juggle
it all over again
if I want to come out on top
Before I can write a song
Before the words and melody flow along
I need to know what I'll say
Then I'll write away
and throw myself in headlong
And as determined as I am today
it doesn't mean it won't take long
But I'll work hard to write you a song
I'll have a tough time
but won't give up
even if I'm diswrought
Suddenly the words will rhyme
I'll speed up
Only to get stuck in a knot
Before I can write a song
Before the words and melody flow along
I need to know what I'll say
Then I'll write away
and throw myself in headlong
And as determined as I am today
it doesn't mean it won't take long
But I'll work hard to write you a song
And when I'm about to quit
I'll see the end
and know my luck's changed a lot
I'll be so glad I made it
around the bend
I'll wonder why I was ever distraught
And I'll say to myself "Yay!"
And I'll say to myself "Yay!"
And I'll sing to myself
the song I wrote today

I like the beginning verse, the rhythm flows very well, and it clearly sounds like it could be set to music. The meaning of the refrain is there, but I think the rhyming words seem a little bit unsophisticated. The rhythm still works, but it sounds almost kid-ish and too matchy. The verses are great and the song has development and a kind of plot which is good. “I’ll say to myself “yay!” is again, a little bit unsophisticated. Maybe something Taylor swift-y like “And I’ll smile softly to myself. And I smile softly to myself”. It doesn’t have to rhyme and most song lyrics don’t. I.E. “ I was riding shotgun with my hair undone/In the front seat of his car/He's got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel/The other on my heart”
You have rhythm down very well and that’s the most important thing. The ending phrase is very perfect and creates a great mood.
