"According to some, heroic deaths are admirable things. (Generally those who don't have to do it. Politicians and writers spring to mind.) I've never been convinced by this argument, mainly because, no matter how cool, stylish, composed, unflappable, manly, or defiant you are, at the end of the day you're also dead. Which is a little too permanent for my liking." — Jonathan Stroud (Ptolemy's Gate)

Verse 1: A few short days since you turned eighteen
You told your momma and daddy the news
I’d known first, I’d seen your face
Just that morning
At the recruiter’s booth
Seen the way that your eyes lit up
As you watched Old Glory fly
And as you drew that pen across the page
I saw the glint of a tear in your eye
Yah

CHORUS You stood up for the innocent
For the home of the free and the brave
Your country, your land, vowed to protect
Ready to take that vow to the grave
I know you’d take a bullet for America
For the flag you laid your life on the line
‘Cause we all need a hero
And I think I found mine

Verse 2: I squeezed you hard, one last time
And you told me ‘I love you.’
Pride in your duty etched in your face
You saluted
And drove away
And I knew in the front of that pick up truck
Was a soldier who’d do what was right
And I knew when you climbed off of that plane
For your country, your home, you would fight

CHORUS You’d stand up for the innocent
For the home of the free and the brave
Your country, your land, vowed to protect
Ready to take that vow to the grave
I know you’d take a bullet for America
For the flag you laid your life on the line
‘Cause we all need a hero
And I think I found mine

Verse 3: The tears flowed down as the guns rang out
Drawn pained faces saluting you
You were that man’s Saving Grace
You took the blow
For someone you hardly knew
The trumpets rang and they called me up
I took the flag, for which you died
On behalf of a grateful nation they say
And I proudly hold it high

Bridge: Because I know it’s true
And I love you
And you did that nation proud
When
CHORUS You stood up for the innocent
For the home of the free and the brave
Your country, your land, vowed to protect
Yah you took that vow to the grave
I know you took the bullet for America
For the flag you laid your life on the line
‘Cause we all need a hero
And I think I found mine

Yah we all need a hero,
And I know I found mine

Sad, but beautiful.  In this, my favorite part was definately the chorus, but I liked the entire thing.  As a generalization, you seem to love writing about duty and love.  Well, keep on, you're good at it.

Thanks so much!  And yes, it's country. :)

I don't really like that line either, but I didn't know what to change it to.  Any suggestions?

Beautiful. Out of curiosity, is it country? It sounds like it could be, and that's a good thing, too. :) Just one thing:

Drawn pained faces saluting you

For some reason, that phrase "drawn pained faces" doesn't fit well to me. Do you mean literally drawn, as in with pencil, pained faces or pain-drawn, as in the facial expression?

Thank you so much. :)

Live for today, not for tomorrow

This truly shows the love a wife, sister and friend has for a soldier going off to war. It shows the sadness and resignation and preparing for the possibility of never seeing them again. Well done. I like it!
