"Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things." -T.S. Eliot

Baby’s crying in its crib.

Momma won’t take care of it.

She can’t.

She’s lying on the floor.

Can’t get up or fall asleep.

Darkness she has for keeps.

No one sees the cracks beneath

Her smooth exterior.

House is painted white outside.

All the flowers have died.

No one really knows why

They never see her face.

She gets down on her knees,

Oh, Lord, I beg and plead.

Cure me of this disease.

I’m fading away.

She says,

So tell me I’m wrong.

Say this can’t be right.

Take this monster in my hand.

Break it.

Write it in the sand.

Tell me you understand tonight.

Careful, don’t make a sound.

You’ll wake the dead or the clown.

Terrified when he’s around.

You should never look at its face.

Friends are sending you cards.

One wants to know how you are.

Don’t let them see the Bell Jar.

I don’t dare write her back.

Think you should brush your hair.

Maybe then you’ll learn to care.

Close your eyes, you disappear

Never to be found.

Shake me.

Wake me.

Say you hate me,

Ask your questions,

But you won’t break me.

You’ll never see me cry.

She gets down on her knees.

Oh, Lord, I beg and plead.

Cure me of this disease.

I’m fading away.

She says,

So tell me I’m wrong.

Say this can’t be right.

Take this monster in my hand.

Break it.

Write it in the sand.

Tell me that you understand tonight.

She says,

So tell me I’m wrong.

Say this can’t be right.

It’s too hard to fight.

Please, take this monster in my hand.

Break it.

Write it in the sand.

Tell me that you understand.

Empty to forget my name

Tonight.

So tell me I’m wrong.

Say this can’t be right.

Take this monster in my hand.

Break it.

Write it in the sand.

Tell me that you understand

Tonight.
