A Rainy Night With You

Hitting the pavement like boys with baseball bats.

Our reflection bids us goodwill beneath us.

“Is it okay if we stop for a chat?”

So we plant on a bench to discuss.

Have you ever seen a more beautiful night?

The clouds selling their passion to Earth

In the form of pearls: burning, bright.

Dancing downstairs, beginning their birth

The Heavens somber, a melancholy mask

Turning a blind eye to the wonder

Us down here, we’re up to the task.

Our favorite song is your lightening and thunder.

The rain kisses our faces.

One icy flame and two rolls of prickly satin

This is the peace that prefaces

The chaste perfume of the grass we sat in.

Now their tears paint us entirely

Like a tuxedo, or a bride’s dress

Shielding us from our cares, reliably

Oh but,

“Look, we’re such a mess!”

I dry you off and you dry me.

Like water is poison, we do.

We shake hands and almost agree

That rainy day was overdue.

The curtain opens on a scene plain and hushed

A freshly powdered sky waves hello

She nudges the darkness away, unrushed

To make enough room for her tempting glow.

I’ll never forget the shower that day.

Though cold, wet, awful, grey

It reminded me of the salad days.

I stop and think of that rain always.
