Mother came in
and opened the door
in a way that she hadn’t
ever before.

“The day is soon coming!
It’s almost here!”
said Mother with such a
great cheer.

“How excited you must be.
Oh, my little dear!”
Her eyes began filling
watering with tears.

“What do you mean,” I asked.
“What’s almost here?”

“Why your first day of school
it’s coming, it’s near!”

“What?” I thought.
“Could that be here?
Surely I had at least one more year!”

I quivered and shook with a fear.

“September 2nd is when you start
that’s in two weeks and there’s much to do. I’ve already bought you a new lunch pail. Look, it’s blue!”

The kitchen timer began to ring.
“Do not worry we will talk about everything.”

Mother stepped out of the room
cheering and singing away
as I looked at my room and my toys
with such a dismay.

Oh why, oh why
did this day have to come?

I know what I’ll do
I’ll run and I’ll run.

I’ll tell them I joined the circus
is what I’ll say.
I’ll hide and I’ll hide
from that horrible day!

I won’t go I won’t.
I’ll jump on a speed boat.

I’ll jump, and I’ll skip and I’ll hide away forever until the end of time.

They can’t make me go
I won’t, I won’t!
Away on that speed boat
I’ll float and I’ll float.

And if I can’t find a speed boat
I’ll go outside to the clubhouse
and I’ll build a moat.

They’ll try to get me
they’ll try and they’ll try
but I’m on the other side, you see
all nice and dry.
But if somehow they get buy
and they cheat---
Not to worry
I’ll have them beat.
On my Pumper-pum-pella
I have a seat.

Up, up, up, I will go
flying high through the clouds
I will glide and I’ll soar

And if they somehow do find me
they’ll say “Stop! Fly no more!”

But not to worry, I’ll have my
Para-pip-gippin that I’ll float to the floor.

And awaiting me will be a submarine at the ocean’s shore.

Inside I will climb
and will drive it away.
In another country I’ll be in
later that day.

If underwater, somehow they still find me, I’ve still got them beat
Not to worry-
I’ll hop in my Zig-zI’ging-reat
and off it’ll take me
off to my island retreat.

And if by then they’ve called
the police, the fireman, and the fire chief I will have no choice but to use my Try-glisery-fuse

Up, up, up past the stars I will blast until I’m in space all alone,
finally at last.

They’ll never be able to reach me up here, but I think I might get lonely all the way up here.
After all, I’m my mama’s 'little dear!'
I might cry and start to tear.

Oh, dear
I couldn’t do that
no, no, no, I do fear!

What will I do?
I feel so afraid
this is all just so new.

Mother took me
to buy new books, new clothes
and some shoes, a backpack to wear
Why, she even put gel inside my hair.

Dad took my picture
as I stood there and posed
as I looked at those children
so very apposed.

“I don’t want to be here
not anywhere near.
Take me home now!
This place makes me fear.”

Dad held my hand
Mom held me close
on our way towards the school
I protested the most.

“I may be small
and I don’t like to shout
but I’ll scream if I have to
I want out, out, out, out!”

We walked in the class
and I looked all around...
Why, there were toys and blocks and books on the ground.

Games, drawing, and dolls
all around.
Why even my favorite book
was there to be found.

A place to play dress up,
neat toys and a train
a science center, a playground
a large toy plane!

What place was this?
Surely not a school
but a playground of bliss!

A lady with such a kind face
had a toy turtle on her hand
I went up to her
as she sat near the sand.

“Excuse me miss?”
I said, “But, what place is this?”
“Why, this is your class,”
she said, “and I am your teacher Miss. Highliss.”

I shook her hand
happy to greet
but I practically fell to the floor
as I fell to my feet
with such disbelief.
Why this place must be wrong.
But NO!
Oh, what a relief.

For the first time
I didn’t want to run
I wanted to play
For this place was fun.

We sang songs and told stories
made friends and ate treats
I even learned how to tie my own shoes on my very own feet.

I learned my ABC’s
And how to write my name.
Why not coming to school
would have been such a shame!

Although I felt scared and wanted to run I was so glad I didn’t
for I would have missed out on all of that fun, fun, fun, fun!

I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality. ~H.A. Overstreet
