Where I'm From
I am from boat cruises
as the sun sets beneath the saturated trees.
I am from a wooden dock
on a glossy, turquoise lake.
Summer rides in the Jeep
with the doors off.
I am from a businessman and a runner,
from “Make good decisions” or “It’s good karma.”
I am from Marc and Abbie, from truthfulness.
Praying before Sunday night dinners spent together.
I am from soft sand sticking to salty feet and Dove ice cream bars,
from sunsets and Doc’s greasy pizza.
I am from freshman year,
making the lacrosse team.
I am from prolonged practices
and close games in the cold.
Sweaty bus rides, blasting throwbacks
and knowing every word.
I am from storms waking me up at night.
Howling winds, blinding lightning, booming thunder.
I am from sailing on summer nights
and sleeping in damp swimsuits.
I am from gooey s'mores
washed down with Arnold Palmers.
I’m from the stained wooden house
on an epic hill.
Plushy couches and concrete countertops
covered in papers.
A porch overlooking the tranquil water
where the blue boat cruises.
