Popsicles
Do you know those popsicles?
The ones that stain your tongue?
That remind you of when you were young?
The kind that tastes like summertime
Without a single care
Nor with reason nor rhyme
They are blue like afternoon sky
Their flavor sweet
As friendships die
Or they are lemonade pink
Like innocence and bliss
Long nights where one does not have to think
Growing up is sad
Maturity screams like an angry mob
It can make an aging heart throb
Go ahead and whittle your life away
In a gray paper box
You are the one who sets the locks
Unlike us is Peter Pan
Forever a boy
Never a man
Eyes like stars
Burn out so fast
But do not reappear every evening
How painful
Time moves far faster than light
It moves faster than life
Hairs turn silver quick
Bright clear youth
Becomes an oil slick
Did you know those popsicles?
The ones that stained your tongue?
That reminded you of when you were young?
The kind that tasted like summertime
Without a single care
Nor with reason nor rhyme
They were lemonade pink
Like innocence and bliss
Long nights where one does not have to think
Sometimes were blue like afternoon sky
I assume that is what it tastes like
When a person dies
Do you know those popsicles?
The ones that stain your tongue?
That remind you of when you were young?

This piece was inspired by long Summer nights when I was younger. Running across the street and back again with a melting popsicle in my hand. It sometimes hurts to think about it. Everyone grows up, moves away. Everyone grows old, eventually, dies. I believe that when a person dies, they deserve to have one last taste of youth before they pass.
