I am a Queen bed
Placed in the corner
Accompanied by a night stand

   I cradle a future queen
Who is oblivious of her power

   I was there
when she couldn’t sleep because the monsters under me were making too much racket

    I was there
holding her
when her first boyfriend cheated

    I was there
for her to lie upon after her first kiss
so she could daydream

   I was there
trying the best way I knew how
to stop the tears from flowing
when the love of her life left her
to pursue his soccer career
because she, she was just a distraction

   I was there
when she had the flu and couldn’t walk

  I was there
when Mommy and daddy were arguing
and she was petrified that she was the reason behind it

   I was there
serving as cloud 9
when she found love again

My sheets served as tissues, wiping away her tears
that were shed all through the night
most nights

Those dark circles under her eyes?
those are my fault
i got tired of listening to her cries every night
so I gave her two black eyes

   even with them
she is still beautiful
yet she doesn’t have the slightest idea

She hides them with layer after layer
of foundation to cover her broken
foundation.

she puts on lipstick and smiles to hide her tears
showing off a beautiful smile
that she isn’t pleased with

Her bottom teeth in the front
they are crooked
from refraining from wearing the retainers
that brought more pain in the night
but she never wanted to tell anyone
that her retainers hurt
that her heart was broken because the boy she loved left for a sport
that she felt like she never quite fit in
that she pretended to be super confident even though she had loads of self doubt
that she battled bullying at school each year
that she only felt safe with me or her family

She just wanted to be okay
and she was

She was more than okay
She was perfectly imperfect in the most perfect way

   She sings in her room
because she is too afraid for him to hear her

   She spends another 15 minutes
covering her blemishes
because she’s tired of being called ugly

Now she is told that she is beautiful
that she has the prettiest smile
the greenest eyes
the prettiest singing voice
the best complexion
of course it feels good

but she will never believe it

   Because once upon a time
someone told her otherwise

   Once upon a time
someone tried to dethrone the queen
someone tried to strip her crown

   I’m the only one
to know that she only tells him
that she loves him too
is to hear those 3 words
from him
because she can’t look in the mirror
and say it to the reflection

   She is strong
she is beautiful
she is courageous
she is loyal

...but she doesn’t know it.
