My Angel,
Is a person I hold dear
Joy fills me when he is near
He is my rock, the one to always heal me
A brother, a husband, a son, a friend

My Angel,
Is also a soldier
And isn’t always around
Often he is gone
To help fallen comrades
Those men and women
With their navy suits
And army boots

My Angel,
Has not come home in months
He’s often at war
And I miss him so much
Then today, I found his mother in tears
A woman, often so strong,
Found no comfort with me near
And seemed to wish me to go

My Angel,
Should have been home so soon
Yet I felt the truth
As the man walked into the room
He wore the uniform
My husband wore when he left
And then I knew, I knew
My angel wasn’t coming home again

My Angel,
He explained, had fought long and hard and brave
But he lost the battle and was killed in combat
Leaving my world forever changed
His mother cried and cried
And I felt so alone
So shocked and my heart filled with pain
That finally my own tears gave way

My Angel,
You rest in the ground
As you have for thirty years now
And I still cry each year
On the day you died

And as I write this poem
To you, my love
I think of your youth
And the loss of your touch

You were a son, brother, and husband
But also a comrade, soldier, and friend
And now, you are a veteran

Yet, the greatest person you are
Is an angel watching over our country
A hero who died to protect our rights
A hope in the dark of night
A spark that still shines bright
