“A witch,” they said
She hid the mark

Off goes her head!

“Hares ran wild,” they said
The instant her head fell

Off goes her head!

“Spare this child's mother,” she said
As she lifted Elizabeth into the air

Off goes her head!

“Transfixed,” he said
By Anne Boleyn, the witch

The author's comments:

This poem was written to demonstrate what people thought of Queen Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII's second wife, Elizabeth's mother. It represents part of the reason Princess Elizabeth was exiled. People thought of her as “half witch” including her own father.
