The fairytales I grew up on,
The nursery rhymes I recited,
The joy and fun I had,
As I read a page a day.

Will be gone,
I will outgrow them,
And leave Disney in the Dust,
I will outgrow them,
Leaving the vampires and wicked witches behind,
I will outgrow it all,
And leave my imagination too.

I will type on black keyboards,
Essay after essay on my fingertips,
No time to read of a faraway land,
No time to meet the next hero or heroine,
No time to see the defeat of mighty dragons or selfish tyrants,

I’ll leave it ALL behind,
As soon as I leave home,
But I’m not ready to give it up,
I’m not ready to blow out the invigorating flame these things give me,
I’m not ready to darken the light I shine,
After reading of a brand new world,

I’ll type on my black keyboards,
And I’ll read Non-Fiction only,
I’ll leave Disney and everything like it behind,
And my fun will leave with it,

But that’s not today,
And that day will NEVER come,
Because who says,
I HAVE to give it up?

The author's comments:

Someone once told me to grow up, just because I love to immerse myself into fantasy books and rave about them! This poem was kind of a, punch to that statment. I reallly beleive that when we are older we DON'T have to give these things up.

No way do we ever have to give up Disney and fairytales. Who told you that! Grown ups should always continue to cultivate their imagination.
