I'm a New York girl

Born and raised in a New York world

Restless under the lights of the city

Crazy just like the city's crowd

Blending in perfectly well

In the melting pot

           Of nationalities

                  And religions

Yet the melting pot hasn't

Melted my heart

Still reluctant and stubborn about playing this part

A New York girl stuck like a worm

Within this Big Apple

I'm a jungle kind of girl

And I love concrete

I love the sound of

The street beneath my feet

But can do without

The sounds of gunshots

The boys with canes

And that special holiday

Where a girl can't wear red

                Or

    She might get shot

       She might get

           Some boy

Initiated

        Accepted

With the Bloods

Or the Crips

Take your pick

So

Can't I build my Empire somewhere else?

Ready to be a Southern belle

Where sand and sky collide

And I won't mind

Seeing stars instead of night lights

But I won't leave

All of New York behind

They say the city never sleeps...

And neither do I

I've lived in New York my whole life. Now I'm ready to migrate, like a butterfly, to someplace new.
