The suspense lies in December
as something physical within me -
ice cubes clattering in my lungs
steel weights rolling in my stomach.
Like the great pagans of Greece and
Rome, like the ancient Israelites
I have burned my dreams into the smoke of devotion
in hope that the odor of my desires
will be pleasing to higher beings.
I have sacrificed to gods with strange names:
Common App and GPA
Extra Curriculars and SAT.
Like the farmer who prays for his harvests
and the warrior who prays for his victory
so to does the student pray
for her acceptance.

I wrote this earlier this year while waiting to hear back from colleges I had applied to. It all seems so far away now that I know where I'm going, even though it's only been a few months.

One of my favorite poems I've ever read on the website - probably because I can relate to it so much! Great job. :)
