All I Need Is a Friend MAG

Books fill up my room.
Not baseball cards,
or pictures of girls,
or basketballs.
Maybe a blown up picture of …
… Pam Anderson might help.

Black-framed glasses
and a white,
pale,
lanky
body.
I should start working out.

At least I can read.
I read four books a day last summer.
The librarian,
80-year-old Mrs. Woodsworth,
she knows my middle name.
If only I had a real friend.
I am sick of seeing her old,
bony,
pale body.
Although it resembles mine.

The kids at school laugh.
Is it the way I dress?
Lacoste,
Ralph Lauren,
La Tigre.
I’ve tried every designer out there.
Staying in the house really saves me money.
My stupid rich parents give me $50 a week for lunch.
$50 times 36 weeks …
what is that?
$1,000,
$2,000,
$10,000?
I should probably know.
Straight A’s 12 years in a row
and counting.

With all of this,
or none of this –
it depends how you look at it –
all I need is a friend.

Where's the rest of your work?? ;)

Your poem speaks to me in different ways. It's like I've been in your situation before but vice versa. You should consider writing more, because it seems that you have feelings to express, and you should open up to those feelongs. This is a great poem though. :)

Though everyone says i have a lot of friends, (not trying to rub it in your face) I just can't see it. And a lot of people i know do read, they just don't see books the same as i do. Almost every comment says probably says this, but; i'm really friendly, i love meeting new people. If you just want someone to talk about your day, or someone to actually listen, i think i could be a good candidate.

I can somewhat identify with this, too. I have friends, and we talk about most things, but there is no one I can really talk to, no one who connects with me. My friends and I are just fundamentally not alike. I mean, they worry about guys, and I read the dictionary.... (I mean it.) We don't have anything that matters in common and so we don't talk about them; in my mind a  real friend is someone you can talk to about anything.

So, I keep coming back to this poem again and again. I like it. It says so much... and it makes you feel so much.

I hope this isn't a really personal question, but is this an actual experiance (forgive the spelling, I am a bit tired.) that you have gone through, if so, I can really relate, and I am willing to make a new friend any day, keep up the good work!

What the front door.

i know you like honesty so here goes everything, i see why this peice was put in the mag-not that i'm a strong advocate for friendship or any sort of human contact but i love the concept behind this one, that is, assuming i understand it fully. it was worded perfectly and if you want to change it you're an idiot. sike. do your dance captain.

Amazing! I love this poem and I totally understand how you feel, except for the stupid rich parents. Don't worry, you'll find a friend - the best ones find you.

This has been my favorite free verse so far. I can really connect, I feel as if I'm not living a normal teen's life.

I am good, but not an angel. I do sin, but am not the devil. I am pretty but not beautiful. I have friends but am not the peacemaker. I am just a small girl in a big world trying to find someone to love.

I could connect with this poem. It is a really great piece.
