Mistakes Aren't Always a Good Thing
Down the road I run,
because I saw the sign when the bus drove by.
The driver dropped me at my stop.
To home I ran to dump my bag,
then out the door I burst and here I am now.
Running,
running down the road.
To a halt I skid when I reach the light.
I punch the button,
then bend over and wait.
Bam!
The sign says walk,
but I don't feel like listening.
Across the street I run,
still attempting to get there in time.
To my right I hear the squealing screech of automobile tires.
And with a quick glance,
I realize I'm not going to make it.
Not in one piece at least.
It seems you can't always trust the traffic lights to tell you when it's safe.
Because there's a car skidding towards me,
and there's no way I'm getting to safety in time.
My life flashes before my eyes as the car comes closer,
and closer,
and closer.
Then it happens.
Not only do I feel it but I hear it too.
The crunching and snapping of my own bones.
the bitter pain rises through me,
sweeping me off my feet
and slamming me to the ground.
The cold, hard ground.
The glistening sun against a brilliant blue sky.
That's the last thing I saw after the car and I collided.
The last thing I saw before my life was changed forever.
And it was all my fault.
