When the lights dim
And we’re sealed inside
by the bedroom door
our boat sets sail

We are afloat
upon our words
buoyant
free from the anchors
weight of day

rubbed raw of our disguises
that hide us
from the beasts of the light

when the darkness settles
we are sailors
plain and simple
drifting
on the rolling waves
of memories

away from the land
we journey
further and further
into the thrashing sea
we are released
to our greatest dreams
and deepest fears

through the long
journey of the night
we reveal
and disclose
adding to the endless ocean

until
daylight brings the land
and we climb ashore
unsteady,  unsure

the terrain foreign
distant
compared to the warmth of the sea

and with the start of a new day
we conceal ourselves
and slip out
into separate lives
the sailor inside us
buried deep
until the darkness of the night

This poem was inspired by my three crazy brothers and our nighttime adventures (when we are supposed to be going to sleep.)
