"The tragedy of life is not death, but what we let die inside of us while we live." -Norman Cousins

I was perpetually angry,

a deep, smoldering anger,

that hid it's flames

behind my heart,

singeing the arteries

and blackening the spiderweb of veins

that held everything together.

I was furious–

the feeling was acidic,

corroding what the fire could not reach,

until I was as empty as hollowed bone.

But still,

the anger lingered,

seeping into my skeleton

like a bubbling brine of poisonous marrow.

It took hold of my limbs,

stapled my lips shut,

and left me to simmer,

like a puppet placed gently

across a stove top.
