Solitude

Echoing through my mind
is history and story alike.
Friends and family
and what becomes
of those who I've lost.

The first to find their way here -
to see me as something
Better? Stronger?
Simply, useful?
Yet when the world fell away,
He was gone.
Another life
I couldn't save.

Lost to cold hands;
Left heartless and broken.
The solitude of perfection
striking the match
that burned a fire between us.

And after then, I was not sure.
Who or what could save me?
But a Light in the dark did call out.
Side by side
Yet not hand-in-hand...
Safety was a blissful mirage.

And now I fear the third.
For, third time's the charm,
and also the curse.
For times three means forever,
and I see no future
in solitude.

I started with a school assignment to just write for a few minutes, and this is how it turned out.
