"You don't have to be the best, you just have to care the most."

Who is this girl in front of me?
Why are her eyes so sad?
Why do they not sparkle with the gleam that they once had?
Why does she look so small and frail,
Leaving brokenness in her somber trail?
She looks back at me so startled, like I can see into her soul.
She looks back at me in anger, as if I were a foe.
She looks like she’s been crying, her face a tearstained red.
But I know why she’s been crying; because of sorrow that she’s bled.
There’s no scarlet on her skin or clothes, no.
This kind of scarlet, on the inside it takes its toll.
She seems like she has changed so much, just in this past year.
For the thing that tolls inside her is the disheartening clang of fear.
She’s trying and she’s trying, but each time feels like she’s failing.
How is she not broken down, bleeding rubies, wailing?
It seems a wonder not to be crushed under life’s condemning ton.
But someday, she’ll look back and see the war that she has won,
And each and every battle that meant the world to her.
To give in and give up seeming such a tempting lure.
But still she struggles on
Through life’s heartbreaking ton.
And instead of bleeding rubies, strong as diamond is her heart.
For, of the future, she convinces, she wants to be a part.
So who is this girl looking back so hopefully at me?
Do you see her? Do you see her? Oh, please, tell me that you see.
Can you see that faith-filled girl growing inside me?
She is me reflected for everyone to see.

I love how the poem eventually grew more optimistic and positive at the end. The details and diction were particularly enticing and I love how the poem nicely flows with the rhyming. Love this!
