I love you when you play—
but I don’t love you

I love you on that stage—
but I don’t love you

I love your six string
draped over your shoulder
and your sunglasses
and that stupid leather jacket—
but I don’t love you

I love your coldness
and coolness
and the way you didn’t care—
about anything—
or anyone—
and the way you didn’t love
anyone or anything—
her or me—

I don’t love you—
but I love who I romanced
you to be.
I love you from far away.
