They Sat on the Dock

They sat on the dock.
Laughter was exchanged,
a yelling was made.
Sunshine bronzed their skin,
starlight blessed their sins.
Seasons came,
they went and they passed.
The inevitable seeped in,
the chemicals entered
the water and their skin.
Consuming all that was.
Seconds, minutes, years
ate away at the wood.
Its hold no longer strong,
weakened.
Yet the blue sky came through,
and hope swam in the water.
All the while the wood was rotting away.
The chemicals increased.
The force so strong,
washing away, particle by particle,
cell by cell.
Rain poured down
stealing the past, present, and future.
Yet he still sat on the dock,
and I moved one step closer.

The author's comments:
My Grandparents and the idea of getting old and passing away inspired this poem. There is a dock in their backyard, which has been rotting away over the past years. I thought this was very symbolic of their life and my Grandmothers passing. I was also reminded of the fact that I will one day take their place, and inevitably pass away.
