Something Like A Sister
It was a sunny November day when we met.
She was so little, wrapped up tight in a pink blanket.
Her parents said I could hold her.
I didn't want to hurt her,
But then she looked up at me and smiled.
So I held her.
Flash forward about a year.
She was learning to walk.
She took a step and teetered and fell.
I tried to hold my laugh in,
But then she laughed,
So I laughed.
Flash forward a little bit.
She could walk now and even started talking.
She picked out a book she wanted me to read.
It was much too young for me,
But she looked at me with pleading eyes.
So I read.
Flash forward another year.
Now she wouldn't stop talking and was learning to write.
She wanted me to sing the ABC's with her.
I didn't want to sing,
But she said please.
So I sang.
Flash forward to summer.
Her parents set up a small swimming pool.
She wanted me to swim with her.
The pool was too small for me,
But she begged me to play.
So I swam.
Flash forward a little.
It was raining so she was playing inside.
She asked me to play Barbie's with her.
They were too young for me,
But she pleaded.
So I played Barbie's.
Flash forward to fall.
She was going trick-or-treating at the zoo.
She asked me to go with her.
I was too old,
But she looked so cute in her witch costume.
So I went to the zoo.
Flash forward a year.
It was her first day of school.
I wanted to walk her home from the bus stop.
I had seen her just the day before,
But I knew she would smile when she saw me there.
So I went to the bus stop.
Flash forward another year.
It was late and we were tired.
She wanted to watch "The Muppets".
It was a movie for kids,
But it was her favorite movie.
So I watched "The Muppets".
Flash forward just a little.
We were outside on her swing set.
She wanted to play pirates.
I was too old to play that game,
But she was having so much fun.
So I played pirates.
Now flash back eight years.
It's November again and her birthday is hear.
She's growing up every day.
I miss her being little,
But she's still the adorable little girl I've always known.
So I love her.
