Two black birds flutter outside the window as the teacher
Discusses Gatsby. Dead in the pool
With the blood seeping into the water.
Black duffel bags, Wilson in the bushes
Blood on the cement, the holocaust complete.
Runners running, but not for the right reasons.

Bang. Smoke cloud, everyone upset.
Screaming, pleading, dying, drowning.
But who will come to the funeral, Gatsby?
Poor America is sad with violence.
Bang. An eight year old, a godless car mechanic?

Their world is destroyed by metal shrapnel,
Angry words, and violent actions.
You may fool me, but you can’t fool God.
As the sun paints red over the Boston skyline,
And the black clock stands still,
Daisy is gone and we are borne back ceaselessly
Into the past.

United we stand, united we fall.
We will fight.
We will fight.
Glance back and they are gone,
Only the memory in my mind remains:
Two dark patches in an otherwise lovely view.

The author's comments:
I originally wrote this poem right after the Boston Marathon bombing happened and I had just finished reading The Great Gatsby. I make many references to both the book and the bombing and Boston in general. For me, writing this poem was a coping method because I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. I would make myself read the news articles and look at the pictures. After I wrote this poem, I felt a sense of closure.

Thanks for your comment! No, I actually have never heard of that song or artist, but I will look them up! Glad it meant something for you, too.

wow. i really really like this. the parallel you created has given me a sense of understanding, and sympathy.    at first i thought the title was a reference to "the marathon runner", a song by The Ethonographers.    overall though, 5/5 stars for sure!!!
