I was there when you

laid down to snooze.

I was there when they

woke you and said the news.

I was there when you

cried and held our

baby tight.

I was there when you

called our family

and finally went night.

I was there when my

body arrived, I

tried to hold you

oh so tight.

I was there when

you slept by my

side.

I talked to our

baby the entire

night.

I was there when

your sister stayed

the night.

I fought with God

the entire night.

I watched as you

approached my

casket.

You made me cry.

You pressed our

baby to my casket.

Their life flashed

before my eyes.

I held you tight

and said a prayer.

I finally left and

accepted my fate.

Just remember,

I'll always be there.

I was asked to write a poem based on a picture in my 10th grade english class. A chose the picture of a women pressing her pregnant baby against the casket of her dead husband who died fighting in a war. I read the backstory and my heart went out to her.
