Heroes Going Home
They march in,
in single file,
perfectly ordered,
as they shouldered,
their brothers’ stretchers,
like ants with fallen leaves.
They never dreamed it would end this way,
it’s one flash, over in an instant,
the light fading from the eyes that once glowed,
merely seconds ago.
Those eyes that won’t see,
not friends or family...
not anymore.
The brothers stand, snapping a salute,
as crisp as though it was an officer,
holding back tears as they know,
that these are soldiers,
the heroes coming home.
