The little girl
in pigtails and a tutu
told me that love
is when you have three M&M’s –
the red kind –
but you give them to her
because she likes them,
and you like when she’s happy.

And so I asked her
if I was in love.
She put the purple chalk down
on the sidewalk,
and it sprouted a cloud of dust
in the air.

She looked at me,
her doe eyes wide
with the utmost sincerity –
“I don’t think
he’d give you
the M&M’s.”

This poem is short, with great story-telling and beauty.

The more control you have over yourself, the less control others have over you.

Hey there! I saw your other poem and I noticed you changed that one line! I would comment, but I already did on the forum! Anyways, WOW. Why haven't more people seen this? JEEZE. The simplicity in this poem and yet those four stanzas have the craziest emotion and unexpected ending I have felt in quite some time. I mean, I really was not expecting that. I love the title. I love the way you describe the little girl. Omg. I am in love with this. And the way you described the chalk, it was pretty! Haha. BUT, the ending was like BAM. Totally unexpected and made my heart drop. I was really so very sad to read that. And the second line in that was wicked good. GREAT job. Bravo!
