wooden refuge
Back
in my
wooden refuge
the smell of venison
still lingers
looking out over the cattails
blue
the river
then close
to my wooden refuge
is clover
and winter wheat
fall leaves dead and on the
ground
the sun is drooping
behind the cattails
turning the river
different colors
the turkeys
are high up
in the trees nesting
for the night
then the cattails
are
moving
out steps a
white
tail
deer
he sees me and
smells me but doesn't
run
he walks up to the deer stand
looks at me and isn't
afraid walks to the window
just watching me
yet isn't scared
he smells like the
marsh
my hand
is on the
window sill
he has trust
in his eyes
Then I hear a
semi
starting and suddenly
I'm awake
still in my wooden refuge
the sun still setting
then
suddenly
it hits me...
I'm hunting tomorrow
and have
never
killed
anything
