I Write With Your Voice in My Head
I write with your voice in my head.
I sleep wrapped up in the memory of your arms.
The echoes of your heartbeats count out my footsteps.
The taste of your minty toothpaste greets my tongue
each morning.
And my coffee is the color of your eyes at dawn.
I swear I can feel your breath on my neck at midnight,
The clatter of your shoes on the hardwood floor,
Racing the puppy to dinner.
I smell your perfume in the needles of the evergreen,
The freshly fallen snow.
I hear your laugh in the crashing waves of the ocean,
And taste your tears in the rain.
Are those not your hands spilling ink across my page,
Your fingers counting the fireflies at dusk?
I write with your voice in my head.
I live with your heart in mine.

To love, to be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and vulgar disparity of the life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.”
