The Fighting Temeraire
This soot-black tugboat puffs out steam
as it guides its ancestor:
a maritime masterpiece
that was once the grandest symbol
of tradition and power.
The archaic ship’s pearl sails
now lay quietly furled,
instead of loudly billowing out in the winds.
These torrents of air rage futilely
against the antique masts
that will forever stand strong and proud,
like boulders of tradition
attempting to obstruct the torrents of change.
Perhaps the tugboat pants with exhaustion,
or perhaps it glides along effortlessly
as its prow parts these ancient waters.
It imitates our world’s leaders,
who pull the pieces of a past eon
into an age of betterment.
Light explodes across the sky
in a rainbow ripple
of bloody crimson and burnt gold
that echoes across the ocean’s surface.
The sun sets upon a former epoch,
dawning on a New Era
of possibilities
that even we cannot yet comprehend.
