Remembering the first day
We finger painted pictures together.
Didn’t know what we were painting,
But just kept going for it.
Proud of what we made because it was our own.

The 4th year, we got separated.
A wall between rooms hid our sorrow,
Chipping that bond we built up.
However,
Recess always repaired it.

School could never split us apart.
We found a way to stay together.

The 5th through 8th grades got tougher.
Drama everywhere you’d turn.
Suddenly,
You hated me. For what? I don’t even know.
I think you just hated me as you went with the popular crowd.

Popular. What is popular?
You would know, because you tried.
Pounds of makeup painted your face,
I could barely recognize you.
Where did my best friend go?

School could split us apart.
We found a way to avoid each other.

Then the 12th year rolled around.
You finally came to your senses of being
The real you.
Funny how school can do that to a person:
Either change her for the better or worse.

But talk of college shot up
And blind-sided us.
It was too late to regain the past six or seven years
In that short amount of time.
Too late to enjoy what we should have.

School did split us apart.
We can’t find a way to stay together now.
