The Moon's Game

The sun hides from the night
As night basks in its shame
But once the sun takes flight
The moon can start its game

Its little match of chess
Its stars that he calls pawns
Leave nothing but a mess
Abilities raise wan

The ivory starts soon
Gliding in on gleam
The darkness of the moon
Follows as a dream

Flying through the black
Chasing ‘way the blue
The day is falling back
So night can start anew

The pawns are taken worst
Into opponent’s ring
“That’s why they all go first,”
The queen sighs to her king

The sun is sinking fast
The moon charges the sun
To fall, the moon is last
The night has clearly won

The moon hides from the day
As sun basks in its shame
The moon has given way
So sun can start its game

This poem is amazing. I love how you were able to keep a rhyming pattern and still have it make sense; a lot of people (like me) struggle with that. Great poem!

Oh I love poems that make me smile. This made me smile. I do agree that it reminds me of the walrus and the carpenter. It was great use of rhymes. I liked it a lot!

That makes me curious now, what's the sun's game? Awesome poem! A little confusing at first though.

I love the metaphor to a chess game! I also really like the dialog with the queen because I think that it adds dimension. By the way, I noticed that this poem is listed under the free verse category when it should probably be somewhere else (I would say a category but I don't remember them). I don't believe that free verse poems rhyme though I could be mistaken.

Everyone is capable of looking up and wishing on a star.
So catch it, so contagious, this day-dreamer's disease,
And hope can be your sword, slaying darkness with belief."

This is really great! (: It sort of reminds me of the beginning of the Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll! Which is a compliment coming from me; because I love Lewis Carroll! Haha. Anyway, this was really nice!
