When I Haven't the Strength to Sing
When they give me their nightmares
I sing about my dreams
When they burn me
I sing about the ocean
When they push me to the ground
I sing about the sky
And the soft clouds that float by
When they throw me in the dark and shut the door
I sing about the fireflies
I sing about love
And they tell me I have no love
They lock it up in a cage
And mock me with the key
When they stare at me with disapproving scowls
I sing about smiles
When they scream at me
I sing about laughter
When they pin their guilt on me
I tell myself I’m innocent
When they leave me in the rain
I dance in it
And when I haven’t the strength to sing,
I find that’s the perfect time to.
